Consultations Around Town

Articles for The Acton Weekly

Members of the Acton Garden Club continued to write articles for The Acton Weekly through the fall/winter season. Sound horticultural advice directed at those gardening in the Acton community was given on the topics of hostas, propagating seeds, September garden activities, spring bloomers, putting the garden to bed, and hollies.

Veteran's Field Project

The Acton-Boxborough Youth Baseball Organization (ABYB) requested that the Acton Garden Club help them beautify the area surrounding a granite donor stone at a baseball complex in town. The area essentially greets the ballplayers and their fans to the two baseball fields. A member and her husband who have a son in the league installed a garden with the emphasis on drought-tolerant plants. They volunteered to get the garden established over the next three years and to teach members of ABYB about the minimal care it will require. A backbone of slow growing evergreen shrubs was planted first. Interest for all seasons was added in the form of sedums, grasses, centaurea, yarrow, and geraniums. Bulbs will be planted in the fall. A list of the plant material and the conditions each is best suited for was given to ABYB so they may use this information at other fields in town.

Wildflower Retrieval

Working with the Town Conservation Commission, the Acton Garden Club is available to assist in a program to help retrieve wildflowers on property slated for development.
