What has Gardening with Young People been up to?
Brownie
Troop #2012, led by Karen Dudziak and
Kelly Kiley, met with Gardening with Young People
committee chairs Cathy Fochtman and Carol
Matson at Douglas School the day before
Thanksgiving to create dried flower arrangements
for Life Care Center of Acton. They used magenta
gomphrena and blue salvia that was cut and dried
from the civic planting of annuals at the Acton Town
Hall oval, in addition to dried grass plumes and yellow
yarrow donated by Garden Club members. The
flowers, mini pumpkins and kumquats were
arranged in a large hunter green teacup. The girls
brought the arrangements to Life Care Center to
present as centerpieces for the Thanksgiving dining
room tables. They played several rounds of Bingo
with the residents in the dining hall, calling numbers
and helping players at the tables.

Boy
Scout Pack 70 was
busy on November 20 raking leaves at the Acton Congregational Church and
afterward visited the Acton Memorial Library to plant spring bulbs along the
library Main Street sidewalk with Cathy Fochtman. Gardening with Young
People provided $100 in bulbs from the Acton Garden Club’s “Bulbs Across Acton”
fund to the tiger scouts. They were introduced to the concept of layering
bulbs at different depths in the ground like lasagna, the larger white Daffodil
‘Ice Wings’ at the bottom, a mixture of medium blue and white Muscari in the
middle and small white Crocus on the top.
